The Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance (DÖW), founded in Vienna in 1963 by a group of scholars, former members of the Austrian resistance and victims of Nazi persecution, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), founded in 1993 as an independent establishment of the United States Government and a memorial to advance and disseminate knowledge about the unprecedented tragedy of the Holocaust and to preserve the memory of those who suffered, can look back on several decades of productive collaboration.

The DÖW and the USHMM formalized their work together by signing a cooperation agreement on December 16, 2024 at the Austrian Embassy. The agreement will enable both institutions to systematically digitize relevant holdings and exchange collections, a joint project slated to start next year.

The signing was preceded by remarks by the Austrian Embassy’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Hans Almoslechner, U.S. Department of State Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues Ellen Germain, Andreas Kranebitter, the director of the DÖW, and Zachary Levine, Director of Archival and Curatorial Affairs at the USHMM. The ceremony was followed by a reception.
