At the Thomas Mann House in Pacific Palisades/Los Angeles on September 17, 2023, the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles organized a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of a truly remarkable Austrian-American composer, music educator, and music critic for the Los Angeles Times: Walter Arlen.

Only a little over a month ago, we celebrated his 103rd birthday.

At the memorial service, Austrian Consul General Postl reflected on Walter Arlen’s life and his importance as a Holocaust witness and survivor. He emphasized the gratitude of the Republic of Austria to Walter Arlen who donated his musical work to the City of Vienna and actively engaged in reconciliation.

We extend our deepest condolences to Walter Arlen’s family and friends. Rest in peace, dear Walter.
