International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025
On January 27, 2024 Ambassador Schneebauer had the honor of lighting a candle at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in commemoration of the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust. She also had to opportunity to meet Peter Feigl, who was forced to flee from Vienna as a child and whose story serves as a powerful reminder to never forget.
Later in the day she gave opening remarks at the Embassy of Austria for the “Spirit of Hope” concert with Shira Karmon and pianist Alexander Vounelakos in commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The Ambassador highlighted the importance of commemorating the Holocaust and the need to continue the fight to combat antisemitism. Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Karmon and Vounelakos paid homage to the composers Viktor Ullmann and Szymon Laks who were prisoners in this concentration camp. The concert ended with some jazz numbers, including one sung in yiddish, which the audience especially enjoyed.
On January 23, 2025 the Ambassador also took part in a candle lighting ceremony at the VII. Congressional Commemoration for Holocaust Remembrance Day at the U.S. Capitol hosted by Sephardic Heritage International in DC (SHIN-DC).
